You are probably wondering why it’s called Grumpy & The Dreaded One’s Little Cafe Of Awesome.
You are probably not alone.
Lee has been writing humour columns for many years under the name Grumpy. The column ran for a long time in music mag Tsunami. His long suffering partner Ann (the chef who prepares the food you’ll be enjoying) featured frequently in the Grumpy stories as The Dreaded One, due to her coloured dreadlocks. There are samples of the Grumpy columns on the clipboards behind the menu.
When we decided to open a cafe, the name Grumpy & The Dreaded One’s Little Cafe Of Awesome came up as a bit of a joke, but the more we thought about it, the more we – and our friends – liked it. We don’t actually claim to be properly awesome, but Grumpy & The Dreaded One’s Little Cafe Of Not Bad just didn’t feel right.
Originally from Sydney, our love affair with Melbourne began several years ago during our annual pilgrimages to Rainbow Serpent and our recovery stays in the Melbourne CBD. At one point, the drive back to Sydney felt more like leaving home than going back home, so we decided to pack up and move down here. Sounds easy when you say it like that, but it was a pretty big move away from a city we knew so well and a solid network of good friends. The call was obviously strong.
We picked up work with a few catering companies and cafes as we found our legs in our new city but felt the need to do our own thing. Together in the past we have run our own catering company from the corporate cafeteria of a leading computer software company, started clothing shop and even scored a couple of DJ gigs. We know what it is like to work together and we under no disillusion about how hard hospitality can be. We like hard work. We like a challenge. We like new adventures.
